Day 14 / Nong Khiaw, Laos

Day 14

Nights without the AC are tough! It was all worth it though, waking up and having breakfast by the river, going for a morning swim…

Good morning, Laos!

We wanted to go for a hike to the Pha Daeng peak viewpoint, we left in the morning for the hike, however I got us a bit lost, we turned the wrong way… finally after an hour or so we turned around, and managed to find the entrance. By this time, it was way too hot, 37 degrees, so we decided to climb the mountain in the evening.

The start of the viewpoint trail
Local kids made this harpoon, they were going fishing but I asked for a try, it’s a clever little weapon

Fast forward to 4pm, we rented a couple of bikes and cycled to the entry point. The fee is 20000 kip each, acceptable, given that the trail is very well maintained.

It is a really tough hike! Expect up to an hour and a half worth of hike, uphill the whole time, on bamboo steps, sharp rocks… by the time I felt like, OK, we have been at this a long time and I’m getting proper tired, we only just got to the halfway sign… Few people have turned around, it’s because of the heat, the 35 degrees weather makes it really difficult.

Looks easy on the pictures, but it is a challenge for sure

It was all worth it in the end, the views are incredible.

The actual color of my t shirt is light grey, but I’m soaked in sweat, gross, right. I guarantee you will be too, if you do this hike 🙂

Our friendly advice; make sure you have proper sturdy shoes on, 1.5 litres of water per person and a torch for descent, if you go in the evening!
